in 1974 and a master of arts degree from Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, IA, in 1993. She has taught German and social studies at South Winneshiek High School, Calmar, IA, since 1993.

Irmgard’s book The Bukovina Germans in Kansas: A 200-Year History of the Lutheran Swabians, was published by Fort Hays (KS) State University in 1988. She also translated and published lllischestie, a Rural Parish in Bukovina: Primary Source Records for Family History (Decorah, IA: 1994). Other works by her have appeared in American, Canadian, and German publications. She is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia (Lincoln, NE), U.S. representative for the quarterly magazine Wandering Volhynians (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada), and a founding member and director of the Bukovina Society of the Americas (Ellis, KS).

Gregg Ellingson was born in West Allis, Wl. He was an athletic manager/trainer as well as a member of band, Broadcasting Club, and yearbook staff at South Winneshiek High School. He graduated in 1995 and enrolled in communications at Waldorf College, Forest City, IA.

Tina Ellingson was born in Hays, KS. She is a freshman at South Winneshiek High School, where she is varsity volleyball statistician, cheerleader, band and treble choir member, and freshman yearbook editor.

Angela Ellingson was born in New Hampton, IA. She attends East Side Middle School in Decorah, IA. She advanced to state Special Olympic competition in May 1995 and won the gold medal in the softball throw event.

Elsbernd, Kenneth and Nancy (Jacobsen)

Kenneth George Elsbernd was born in Decorah. He was the son of Cletus and Georgina (Humpal) Elsbernd. Kenny grew up on a farm a few miles north of Calmar (Section 4, Calmar Twp.). He received his elementary education at St. Aloysius Catholic School, Calmar and graduated from South Winneshiek High School (also in Calmar) in 1965. After high school Kenny entered the U.S. Army. He served in the Army from May 1966 to May 1968. During part of the time he was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. He was the personal cook for a general.

On 18 Jan 1969 Kenny married Nancy Lee Jacobsen at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Decorah. Nancy was born in Decorah. She is the daughter of Melvin and Eleanor (Wise) Jacobsen. Nancy grew up on a farm 10 miles northeast of Decorah (Section 21, Pleasant Twp.). She attended one room schools in Pleasant Township before the township merged with Decorah Community Schools and all the students were bused into Decorah. Nancy graduated from Decorah High School in 1966 and went on to attend the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls.

Kenny and Nancy made their home in Decorah. They became the parents of 2 sons: Kyle William  and Ryan Robert. Kenny was employed by Reilly Construction, Ossian where he operated heavy equipment. Nancy has been the Business Office Manager at the Aase Haugen Home for many years. Kenny and Nancy were members of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church where Kenny was active in the Knights of Columbus. Nancy presently is serving on the Nordic Fest Board.

Kenny died 17 Sep 1993 after a 12 year battle with a brain tumor. He is buried at St. Benedict’s Catholic Cemetery, Decorah. Nancy continues to make her home in Decorah with her Yorkshire terrier, Reese.
